Mindful Teaching: A Talk on Teaching with Heart
By: Riza Ng, MA,CSCLP, RP
Teaching children is not simply instructing them for them to learn. Teaching needs the connection between teachers and students. Teaching also needs the true presence of a teacher deeply tuned in to the needs of his/her students.
Last April 29, 2015, 150 teachers and coordinators from Pili, Camarines Sur came to the the Ateneo Rockwell School of Business to listen to MLAC psychologists Tess Aguilar and I give a lecture on mindful teaching entitled “Teaching with Heart: How to handle pupils’ behavior.” The symposium was sponsored by Synergia Foundation headed by Ms. Nene Guevarra. The foundation along with the MLAC Institute for Psychosocial Services, Inc. share in the mission of forming teachers using the science of Psychology.

In spite of a 4 hour wait (the bus that the teachers rode on broke down), we deemed it essential that teachers learn about the developmental and psychological needs of children to enable teachers to tune in and connect with their students. Learning becomes facilitative and more engaging. The teachers gained so much from the short but sweet lecture. They were very energized and inspired to teach with a new awareness of teaching with heart.

It is the hope of MLAC that teachers can continue to teach from their heart and with their heart.
